Internship

Course Description:

The specific course concerns the Internship of students at a full time basis (8-hour working days of the week) in private companies or public organizations (e.g. Athens Water Supply and Sewerage Company, Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization, Greek Railways Organization etc.) on subjects relevant to Civil Engineering background. The course is mandatory by election in the 9th Semester for all concentrations and is carried out in the 10th Semester. In exceptional cases students of other semesters may participate in this course. The Internship is performed for a period of 2 consecutive months (e.g. from March to July or during September-October). The Internship is co-funded by the European Union (European Social Fund (ESF) and National Resources (through funds managed by the NTUA)

Prerequisite Knowledge

The prerequisite knowledge that the students will probably need to have while they carry their internship, largely depend on the activities of the Organization/Company (e.g. Athens Water Supply and Sewerage Company, Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization, Greek Railways Organization etc) as well as on the specific activities assigned to the student.

Course Units

# Title Description Hours
1 Summary Internship entails the training of students at an Organization/Company according to the working hours of the Organization/Company (regularly morning hours, for 8-hour working days of the week) and lasts for 2 consecutive months. The student is entitled to leave for 2 days in total. His total employment is in the order of 330 hours.

Learning Objectives

Internship contributes to a more meaningful connection of NTUA with the production environment and essentially supports:

  • The consolidation of the theoretical and technological background of the students through their implementation in practice as well
  • The familiarization of students with the real working environment and conditions

Teaching Methods

Teaching methods Internship is carried out under the monitoring of an Academic Supervisor (Supervisor) and a Supervisor on behalf of the Company/Organization, that evaluate the student performance through standardized forms. After the completion of their internship, the students fill-in the Evaluation Report, where they describe the company/organization profile and activities and the tasks they undertook. They also evaluate the usefulness of the knowledge they have acquired through the courses they were taught at the School of Civil Engineering as well as the need for extra knowledge that they identified during their training. In this report the students also evaluate the potential for a future employment through the internship as well the benefits or other positive experience they gained. This report is submitted to the Academic Supervisor for checking. In case that the report is not satisfactory, it is returned to the students for modifications/additions.
Assignments (projects, reports) The students fill-in the Evaluation Report, where they describe the company/organization profile and activities and the tasks they undertook. They also evaluate the usefulness of the knowledge they have acquired through the courses they were taught at the School of Civil Engineering as well as the need for extra knowledge that they identified during their training. In this report the students also evaluate the potential for a future employment through the internship as well the benefits or other positive experience they gained. This report is submitted to the Academic Supervisor for checking.
Other The course of internship is not graded. The student performance is assessed as “Success” or “Fail”. In case of successful completion, the student is granted an exemption on this specific course. The course assessment is based on the Evaluation Report composed by the students after the completion of the internship in combination with the evaluation from both the Academic Supervisor and the Supervisor on behalf of the Company/Organization.
