Laboratory of Traffic Engineering

The Traffic Engineering Laboratory founded in 1998 belongs to the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering of the School of Civil Engineering. Since its foundation the Traffic Engineering Laboratory has contributed to transportation science through numerous academic and research activities.

Traffic Engineering Laboratory scientific fields are summarised as follows:

  • Traffic flow analysis and modeling in urban and highway road networks.
  • Traffic capacity and level of service estimation in highways, arterials and intersections
  • Analysis and modeling of urban signalized networks
  • Analysis and estimation of signalization, delays, queuing and tollway systems.
  • Design and implementation of traffic management systems
  • Design and operation of parking systems
  • Analysis of pedestrian and cyclist traffic
  • Traffic safety analysis
  • Investigation of hazardous locations
  • Traffic counts and surveys
  • Intelligent transportation systems for traffic management and road safety
  • Statistical analysis, mathematical modeling and computational intelligence for traffic and safety

Within the academic activities of Traffic Engineering Laboratory, 4 courses are offered at the transportation engineering cycle of the School of Civil Engineering: Traffic Flow theory (7th semester), Urban Traffic Networks (8th semester), Traffic Management and Traffic Safety (9th semester) and Special Topics of Traffic Engineering (9th semester, elective). Over 100 diploma theses and 2 Ph.D. theses have been carried out at the Laboratory.

The members of Traffic Engineering Laboratory have participated in more than 80 research projects funded by EU or national resources covering all the above mentioned scientific fields. Research results from the Diploma and Ph.D. theses and from all research activities of the Laboratory have been published in more than 220 papers in peer-reviewed journals and scientific conferences proceedings.

The Traffic Engineering Laboratory staff consists of 1 Professor, 1 Associate Professor and 1 Lecturer, as well as 3 Ph.D. students, more than 15 research engineers and 2 administrative staff.

The Traffic Engineering Laboratory is located at the NTUA Zografou Campus. The equipment belonging to the Traffic Engineering Laboratory consists of a large number of instruments, devices and computer software for the traffic and safety data collection and processing. Within these instruments are included automatic data collection devices for capturing real time traffic volume, speed, vehicle position, image and sound. In 2009 the Traffic Engineering Laboratory has acquired an advanced driving simulator for which special applications are being developed. The driving simulator is already used for the detailed recording and analysis of the data related to the driver behaviour in various road types and traffic and weather conditions.
