General Information

The School of Civil Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens, the oldest engineering school in the country and alma mater to all other engineering Schools, has played a protagonist role in the scientific, technical and economic development of the country during its many years of operation. Since the 19th century, in turbulent or tranquil periods of recent Greek history, the School’s graduates have been a solid reference and bedrock of the construction and reconstruction of the country and its infrastructures.

The School’s graduates are not limited by the borders of the country and often leave their mark on world scientific and technological developments. Teaching staff and students are actively involved in the global production of new knowledge. As a result of the great quality of work by professors, undergraduate and postgraduate students, in recent years, the School finds itself highly positioned in International School rankings — for example, in the top 50 worlwide and 14th amongst European Civil Engineering Schools, according to the QS Ranking, and 7th in the world, according to ShanghaiRanking.


According to the QS organization (2019), NTUA’s School of Civil Engineering is ranked in the top 50 of world universities and 14th in Europe. The classification criteria are: (1) academic reputation (weight 40%), (2) reputation in the labor market and employment of graduates (30%) and (3) recognition of the research work of the School (30%). The school holds a prominent position in Greece as well: Of all the country’s schools, only NTUA‘s School of Civil Engineering appears in the top 50 in the last 5 years.
 

The School includes four Departments, each of which constitutes a unit of science and technology production and dissemination.

The Department of Structural Engineering is active in the fields of theoretical and experimental structural analysis, dynamics, structural stability analysis, shaping and calculation of metal constructions, reinforced and prestressed concrete structures, antiseismic technology and related computer applications. The Department is also active in construction engineering and management of the production of technical works throughout their life cycle – from concept to delivery, operation and maintenance. Five Laboratories are part of the Department, the Laboratory of Reinforced Concrete, the Laboratory of Steel Structures, the Laboratory for Earthquake Engineering, the Laboratory of Structural Analysis and Antiseismic Research, and the Laboratory of Construction Equipment and Project Management

The Department of Water Resources and Environmental Engineering, has as a subject the quantitative and qualitative study of the aquatic environment and the related Civil Engineering projects. It covers educational and research areas of Hydraulics, Hydrology and Water Resources, Hydraulic Works, Environmental and Sanitary Engineering, Marine Hydraulics and Harbour Works, Energy and Hydroelectric Projects. The Department includes four laboratories, the Laboratory of Applied Hydraulics, the Laboratory of Harbour Works, the Laboratory of Sanitary Engineering and the Laboratory of Hydrology and Water Resources Development.

The Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering, covers educationally and by research, the transport of people and goods by all means, through research, general planning and feasibility studies to implementation, construction and operation studies. It also covers the design of material blending used to road building as well as the construction and maintenance of pavements, roads and airports. Three Laboratories are included, the Laboratory of Traffic Engineering, the Laboratory of Pavement Engineering and the Laboratory of Railways and Transport.

The Department of Geotechnical Engineering covers a wide range of knowledge that includes among others the study of soil behavior under static and dynamic loading conditions, rock and geological formations behavior and seismic behavior of underground structures, dockside breakwaters and bridges pedestals. Moreover, it covers calculation, design technical works and foundation constructions, protection and restoration of the geoenvironment. There are two laboratories in the Department, the Laboratory of Soil Mechanics and the Laboratory of Foundations Engineering.

Moreover, in School, there is a fully operational PC Lab. The School participates in various postgraduate programmes that are co-organized by all NTUA’s nine Schools. Two of those, operate under the administrative responsibility of the School of Civil Engineering in the subjects of Design and Analysis of Earthquake Resistant Structures and Water Resources Sciences and Technology.

School’s Departments, Laboratories and post-graduate programmes are active in educational and research activities carried out in the context of diploma and postgraduate theses, doctoral theses and national, European and international research projects. The latter is closely linked to School’s educational effort as a whole and thus is reinforced with additional specialized research staff.
The educational and research needs of the School are being developed in about 40,000 square meters, many of which belong to the School’s laboratories.
